How gym climbing works.
There are two main styles of gym climbing: bouldering and roped climbing.

Climbers who boulder don’t use ropes since the top of the bouldering climbs are low enough for climbers to jump down safely. Bouldering is a great way for climbers to hone their climbing skills and build strength. When bouldering, you do not need a climbing partner.
To climb the tall climbing structures, every climber must tie into a climbing rope and have a climbing partner on the ground managing the rope. The rope management is called “belaying”. Every roped climber needs a Planet Granite certified belayer managing his or her rope. New climbers, who come to the gym with a certified belayer, can try roped climbing without gym staff instruction but they cannot belay. New climbers with no belaying experience must take the Belay Lesson or Beginner Rock Climbing Course to learn rope management.

Taking a Lesson
We offer Belay Lessons every day but Wednesdays. Class size is limited to 4 people to insure personal attention so classes fill up quickly. Reservations are strongly recommended. Class participants will be allowed to belay on the day of their course but will be required to take the belay test for belay certification on their next visit to the gym. New climbers can also jump right into a five-week Beginner Rock Climbing Course (BRC) offered every Wednesday. This course starts with belaying and continues with climbing movement and technique. The BRC is the ultimate introduction to indoor climbing.

Taking the Belay Test
Experienced belayers, who are new to Planet Granite, will be required to take the belay test before they can belay in our gyms. Belay lesson and BRC participants will also be required to take the test on their first return visit after their class. Belay tests are given on request. Inquire at the front desk upon checking in.

Kid’s Climbing at PG
Kid’s are natural born climbers. At PG we have developed a number of programs that allow kids to experience the benefits of climbing. For more information, click here.
