Planet Granite Chicago Plan Grows to Two Gyms With Roped Climbs
Chicago expansion will now include a second large gym with 40,000 square feet
After lots of positive comments from the Chicago climbing community, Planet Granite has decided to increase the size and scope of its second gym slated for the Southwest corner of the intersection of N. Sheffield Ave. and W. Diversey Parkway. In place of the 24,000 square foot bouldering gym announced last month, we will build a 40,000 square feet full roped climbing, bouldering, yoga and fitness facility.
With the new design for the Diversey gym, the two PG Chicago gyms will rank as the two largest in Planet Granite’s family of full-service climbing, yoga, and fitness facilities. That brings the combined size for the PG Chicago sites to 85,000 square feet.
“This is a great location across from the Metro, and with all the positive feedback we’ve had, we’ve decided to add roped climbing to this second gym,” says Micky Lloyd, founder of Planet Granite.
Located a stone’s throw from the Chicago Metro’s Diversey Brown/Purple stop, this expansive gym will have 40,000 square feet of space in a new custom-designed building. The climbing facility will be on the second, third and fourth floors and will offer climbing over 50 feet high.
The design will incorporate ample numbers of windows for light and balconies within the building to create a three-dimensional feel to the space for climbers, yoga classes, and weightlifters.
“There is a good community of climbers in the Northwest corridor along Milwaukee and we hope to have an announcement about a third facility there soon,” says Stephanie Ko Pound, Sr. Dir. of Marketing. “Our goal is to open a pod of facilities in the Northwest quadrant of Chicago to give a similar variety of climbing as we offer with our three Bay Area facilities.”
