On July 19th, 2011 Planet Granite Member and friend John Horn Jr. passed away as a result of a stroke.  John, a climber since the age of 16 could often be found on Planet Granite’s Lead wall doing what he loved most, Sport Climbing.  In an effort to help others pursue there passion for sport climbing as John did Laurie, John’s wife, has established the John L. Horn Memorial Sport Climbing Award.

“The John L. Horn Memorial Sport Climbing Award provides an opportunity for young members of the American Alpine Club’s Sierra Nevada section to explore the world, and expand their life’s adventures, aspirations, and connections. This grant is designed for young people who share John’s passion for this particular branch of climbing, and who, as awardees, are willing to serve as lifelong sport climbing ambassadors to the larger climbing community. For John, the “spirit of sport climbing” encompassed these important values: competition (in the purest sense), the drive for success, camaraderie, and, above all, the love of adventure.” excerpted from the website.

John’s life was marked a passion for sport climbing, travel, and adventure. After beginning to climb at age 16 in England, climbing took him to three continents, and all around the United States.   His travels included local crags such as Jailhouse Rock, Kalymnos Greece, Thailand, and the Red River Gorge, all where he had many notable sends.

Please read more about the details of this annual award and about John’s life on the newly established memorial website.
