Planet Granite offers a variety of climbing classes for everyone from the brand new climber to the experienced ones looking to better their technique. If you are new to climbing, please visit our Getting Started page.

Group Belay Lesson

BELAY LESSONS
Prerequisites: must be 14 years or older.

The belay lesson teaches you to manage the ropes (called belaying). We offer belay lessons every week night and every weekend! A beginner belay lesson includes gear rental (shoes and harness) and one day pass. At the end of class, students will receive a temporary belay card so they can continue to climb and belay for the rest of the day!

To earn a permanent belay card, each person will need to come back on a separate day and take our belay test (no reservation necessary--however, during busy hours, there might be a wait to take the test).

Reservations are recommended - our classes tend to fill up!. We only allow 4 students per class so the instructor can devote personal attention to each student. Class dates and times are listed below.

Classes are normally an hour long and are offered at the following times*:
Planet Granite San Francisco:
Monday - Friday 6pm, 7pm and 8pm
Saturdays: 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm, 3:30pm and 4:30pm
Sundays: 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm, and 3:30pm

Planet Granite Belmont
Monday - Friday 6:30pm and 7:30pm
Saturdays: 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm, 3:30pm and 4:30pm
Sundays: 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm, and 3:30pm

Planet Granite Sunnyvale
Monday - Friday: 6pm, 7pm and 8pm; Tues, Weds & Thurs also at 5pm.
Saturdays: 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm, 3:30pm and 4:30pm
Sundays: 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2pm, and 3:30pm

Planet Granite Portland
Monday - Friday 6pm, 7pm and 8pm

PARENT & CHILD BELAY LESSONS - regular time slots
For parents who are interested in learning to belay for their child, we offer a Parent/Child Belay lesson. Price includes a harness for one child and one adult. Each adult must bring at least one child with them for the class, since the parent will need a "climber" to work with as they learn. Additional children are $16.
If there are children under the age of 18, please call ahead of time regarding waiver information.
Class times are same as the above listed belay lesson times.

ADDITIONAL OPTION - Child climbs with our staff during belay lesson (PG SF and PG Belmont only)
PG San Francisco and PG Belmont offer an additional option for your child. During the belay lesson, our event staff will belay your child and get them climbing! Once the belay lesson is complete, you will have the rest of the time to belay your child. The cost is $45 and includes a belay lesson and day pass for one adult, 1 hour of climbing for one child and rental gear for both. Space is limited so please call for reservations.

Planet Granite Belmont

Cost: $45 for one adult and one child, $16 for additional child

Planet Granite San Francisco
Saturdays & Sundays - available during all regularly scheduled weekend belay lessons.

BEGINNER ROCK CLIMBING COURSE (BRC): An in-depth introduction to gym climbing
The Beginner Rock Climbing Course (BRC) is a very popular 4-week introductory course to rock climbing. It consists of 4 lessons; the first lesson shows you how to belay and gets you started climbing. In the weeks afterward, you will learn efficient climbing techniques, bouldering, climbing terminology and more. Bouldering Climbing Class

The BRC also includes access to our Belmont, San Francisco and Sunnyvale gyms for the duration of the 4 week course. Plus, we will waive your initiation fee if you choose to join Planet Granite at the end of the course. The BRC is offered every week - please call your local PG to reserve your spot! Cost: $129 includes harness and shoe rentals for class nights and access to the gym for one month. (Already a member? Only $99 for the class.)


FUNDAMENTALS (CLIMBING OR BOULDERING)
Prerequisites: for route climbing, must be Planet Granite Top Rope belay certified.

A perfect follow up to the belay lessons! This class covers the essential techniques, hand and body positions to build a foundation for climbing. Route climbing or bouldering option; boudering option includes how to fall correctly and spot your fellow climber.

Cost: $30 members | $35 non-members, non-member rate includes free intitiation if signing up for membership by class date.


BALANCE AND TECHNIQUE (CLIMBING OR BOULDERING)
Prerequisites: must be TR belay certified, best for those climbing 5.9 and V1

Looking for greater ease in your climbing?  This 4-week course focuses on finding balance through precise footwork and optimal body positions, sequencing, and how to find rests.  The skills taught in this class are essential to every climber, from beginner to advanced.  This class will benefit the climber who wants to learn better climbing technique, establish good climbing form for lead climbing, and those pushing harder grades.  Participants must climb 5.9 and be Planet Granite belay certified.

$110 members/$150 non-members (non-member price includes 4-weeks of access to PG, starting on the first day of class. Initiation fee is waived if you sign up within 1 week of the last class session).

LEAD SERIES - 3 classes that work together or individually to help you advance into the sport of lead climbing!
INTRO TO LEAD- Learn to Lead Belay and Climb
Prerequisites: must be TR belay certified, able to onsight 5.10a and climb 10 routes in a session.
Ready to get on the sharp end? Learn all you need to know to lead climb and lead belay in the gym. This is a 2 part class that meets 3 hours per session. 

Cost: $100 for members, $150 for non-members.

PUSHING YOUR LIMITS ON LEAD
Prerequesites: Must be Planet Granite Lead Certified for at least 6 months.
An advanced lead class designed to give you the skills to begin projecting and sending harder.

Cost: $100/$150 non-members

SPORT ANCHORS & RAPPELLING
Prerequesites: must be TR Certified.
Looking to get outside but aren’t sure where to start?  This third class in our Lead Series covers the essentials needed to understand  the basic Sport Climbing setup.   In this 6-hour, 2-day course, learn how to build and equalize a solid anchor, clean it and rappel.  Class is taught in the gym with hands-on practice.  Students can expect to gain an understanding of anchors that can be applied to the variety of anchor set-ups found outside.

CRACK CLINIC SESSIONS
Prerequisites: must be belay certified & climbing solid 5.9’s
Learn how to crack climb, from finger locks to hand jams, in this 2hr clinic. We offer three scheduled crack clinics focused on techniques specific to crack widths: hand, thin, and wide. Must be Planet Granite TR belay certified. 

Each crack clinic is $30 for members, $35 for non-members.

POWER & ENDURANCE TRAINING
Frustrated by your project? Making all the moves but can’t link them together?  This intense 6-week training course will improve your explosive power and help you break through your endurance plateau. Whether it’s a sustained powerful route or an epic 12-move boulder odyssey, this class will give you the tools to meet goals currently just out of reach. This curriculum focuses on adapting training options to your personal needs, whether you are a newer climber who is looking to push harder, or an advanced climber looking to hone your strength.  This is not a technique class.  Students are encouraged to have a basic background in Balance and Technique and a recommended climbing level of V3 or 5.10+.

Cost: $165 members/$225 non-members. (non-member price includes access to PG for the duration of the class)

MASTERS PROGRAM

Planet Granite's Master's Climbing Program is designed with one goal in mind: Progression. In this small group setting, work with our advanced coaches John & Adriel to identify and break through your plateaus. They will provide personalized assessments in 4 week sessions that are designed to build on each other, with focus on integrating hte mental techniques with the physical aspect of climbing. ONE-ON-ONE CLIMBING EVALUATIONS
Found you have plateaued in your climbing?  Not sure which class is best suited for you?  Curious in what areas you can improve?  Try out these 30 minute climbing evaluations.  You will meet one on one with an instructor who will critique your climbing.  This is not an instructional class, but it will provide you with direction on what to do to take your climbing to the next level!  Have a friend?

TEAM OF 2: CUTTING EDGE TRAINING FOR CLIMBERS
Team of 2 combines the expertise of a climbing coach and a fitness trainer to maximize an athlete’s technical, mental, and physical capabilities for rock climbing and mountaineering.

How Does Training with Team of 2 Work?
Athletes work with Justen Sjong, the climbing coach, and Kris Peters, the trainer. The coach and trainer have very different jobs, but work together to provide personalized and well-rounded training programs. As a team, they help athletes increase their current training intensity levels and performance.

Team of 2 provides:
A roadmap for how to be the best athlete you can be, whether you’re new to the sport or an advanced climber.
Expertise in training climbers in every genre, including bouldering, sport, traditional, mixed, ice, and alpine climbing.
A variety of different kinds of sessions, from private coaching or training sessions to adrenaline-filled group training.
Encouragement to help you gain confidence in your abilities and turn challenges into positive experiences.
Personal feedback, digital and verbal, on your climbing to help you achieve your goals.

WARRIOR'S WAY® MASTER CLASS ON FALLING AND COMMITMENT
a regularly scheduled guest workshop taught by Warrior's Way Instructor Jeff Lodas

This training addresses falling directly to help improve commitment. We do progressive falling practice, followed by movement, breathing, resting, and body/mind awareness exercises. Finally, students apply everything to a goal route. Students leave understanding how to take appropriate risks and how to commit to those risks.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Fall safely
  • Give a dynamic (cushioned) belay
  • Break a climb into smaller risk events
  • Assess risks effectively
  • Distinguish between no- and yes-fall zones
  • Engage no- and yes-fall zones appropriately
  • Make appropriate risk decisions
  • Improve body and mind awareness
  • Rest effectively
  • Improve breathing
  • Create flow and momentum
  • Deal with climbing stress
  • Commit more deliberately
  • Reduce fear, and more

Pre-requisites:
Able to toprope 5.8 in a gym with no falls.
Leading is not required. If students are interested in leading during the class, it is required that students be PG Lead & Belay certified prior to the day of the class.
Climb indoors/outdoors at least 1-2 times per week
At least 6 months of continuous climbing experience within the last year.

Cost: $99 PG members, $119 non-member
